Lindsey Bourassa Flamenco Hosts

Performance Update:

Due to an episode of endometriosis that has left me too weak to dance, I cannot perform this weekend - doctor’s orders. I am choosing to be specific about my reason in order to highlight a chronic condition that affects at least 1 in 10 women and yet goes largely ignored or is poorly treated.

Luckily, there are three incredible flamenco artists performing this weekend. Cristian Puig (song/guitar), Marilia Quevedo (dance), and Behzad Habibzai (percussion) will no doubt bring the house down. Truly, we are so very lucky to have them here to perform for us.

How can you best support me and them? Purchase tickets and come to the show… Show up in support of their artistry first and foremost, and in support of me through this difficult time. A full house makes possible my efforts to bring quality flamenco to Maine, even when I can’t be present. I might be in the audience, I might have to be there in spirit. Either way, thank you for your understanding and support. - Lindsey

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and now based in Florida, USA, Marilia Quevedo is a global Flamenco artist, dancer, independent worker and potential dreamer. Flamenco dance is her language, the expression of the soul through the body and the concretion of the union of heaven and earth."The feeling of completeness that Flamenco gives me is an expression of all the emotions kept under lock and key." Marilia has performed, studied and taught worldwide, including the US, Argentina, Uruguay, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Spain.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and now based in Florida, USA,
Cristian Puig's Flamenco career stems from his heritage passed on from his parents Pablo (guitarist) and Gloria (singer). When he was 19 years old, Cristian began his studies in classical guitar at the Conservatory of Manuel de Falla as well as flamenco guitar with his father. He then studied flamenco guitar with Quique de Cordoba and furthered his studies in jazz, bossa nova, and contemporary music with various teachers. He has been self-taught ever since, using his musical influences and inspirations as his guide. In 1989 Puig formed the flamenco-jazz group “Rabat” and led the group in performances throughout South America. Puig came to New York in 2000 from Argentina with a guitar and a dream. He has since played all tablaos in NY and many nationwide. Notable accomplishments: Original compositions for the film The Late Quartet (2012), Tahlia Theater (2002-2012), Entre Cuerdas, with Al Dimeola, Inflam, and Inside/Out. Notable performances: Kimmel Center with Peter Nero and The Philly Pops, The Bahamas International film festival, and the White House with actor/singer Terrance Howard.

Originally a Portland-native drummer/percussionist,
Behzad Habibzai has been playing flamenco guitar for over 25 years, 17 of those in Washington, DC with renowned flamenco artists. Now based in Maine, Behzad is a music composer and flamenco guitarist. He began playing drums and classical percussion at 10, maintaining a busy schedule performing orchestral, jazz, and punk rock, at rock clubs and symphony halls. At 14 he discovered flamenco guitar, going on to portray flamenco forms in performances with several international artists. Having worked regularly as a drummer, percussionist, and flamenco guitarist, he set his sights on the world of orchestration – entering the world of film music. Behzad has already lent his voice to several films and documentaries, helping filmmakers tell stories. Behzad's flamenco album ‘Bosquejos’ (2020), and released singles, can be found on most digital streaming platforms. Behzad often collaborates with his wife, Meghan Pilar Habibzai.

El Lobo Y La Paloma, Virtual Screening

Filmmaker David Camlin & Choreographer/Dancer Lindsey Bourassa have teamed up in partnership with Mayo Street Arts to present a week-long virtual screening of the flamenco film El Lobo y La Paloma from October 18th - 24th, which will conclude with a virtual artist Q & A with the artists at 5 pm on October 24th.

20% of ticket proceeds will go directly to Mayo Street Arts to support their amazing work in our community.

Created by flamenco dancer and choreographer Lindsey BourassaEl Lobo y La Paloma (The Wolf and The Dove) is a multimedia, contemporary flamenco performance that explores themes of loss and connection. Through all original flamenco dance, Arabic music and song, poetry, and projected imagery, the filmed live performance tells a story about the loss of a loved one and the mystical connections between physical and spiritual worlds.

Inspired by the loss of Bourassa’s father in 2015, El Lobo y La Paloma strives to honor the universal experience of loss; that of losing a loved one, a homeland, a freedom, a right, an identity, an ability. It honors the reconstruction of our relationship with our lost being or object, and grief being vital to the process of healing.

El Lobo y La Paloma was produced to empower viewers to honor that which they’ve lost and grieve, to contemplate how they might take steps toward healing, and in some cases, to ponder the legacy they wish to leave this world. Since its 2019 premiere, the filmed performance has been seen via theatrical screenings, streaming online, and distributed by Edovo, a nation-wide digital platform to meet the education, communication, and rehabilitation needs of justice-involved people and their loved ones.

The decision to make El Lobo y La Paloma available on an online platform was expedited by the shock and devastation of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in contemplation of such unprecedented disruption and loss, it is the wish of the artistic team that this work can be used as a means to create space for grief and form connections for those who grieve.

Introduction to Flamenco Guitar Workshop

With Flamenco Guitarist Andreas Arnold

This workshop is designed for guitarists that have little or no knowledge about flamenco but do have a basic level of playing guitar (chords, strumming, basic music theory). Students should bring their own guitar (nylon stringed, classical, or flamenco).

In our time together, we will examine the particular ways that flamenco works rhythmically and harmonically, especially within the context of the guitar. We will learn rhythmic patterns of different flamenco palos (styles), how to play palmas (hand claps), and translate these ideas to the guitar.

Andreas Arnold was born in Germany and lives between Andalusia, Spain and Brooklyn, NY. He has been working as a professional flamenco guitarist for the last 12 years. As a jazz musician who penetrated flamenco from the outside and deeply studied this music for years, he understands the difficulties that musicians might have when first trying to get a grip on flamenco. He can relate flamenco concepts in western terms and de-mystify some of the sounds of this fascinating art form.
