Learn About Flamenco History, Culture, Artists & More

This month we learn about legendary singer Camarón de la Isla as part of new course underway in the online studio called: Flamenco Artists & Their Artistry. This course explores the lives and work of pivotal flamenco artists across generations, with curated biographical information and video footage of their artistry.

Camarón de la Isla

“Veinte años escuchando discos antiguos y sacando cosas a mi manera, he hecho un camino para la juventud del flamenco.” (Twenty years listening to old records and doing things my way, I have made a path for the youth of flamenco).

Part Two

Flamenco Dance Lesson!

Learn a footwork combo in the style of Alegrías!

What is an Alegrías?

Meaning joy, Alegrías are one of the oldest dance forms to emerge in flamenco. Alegrías are performed in a 12-beat rhythm, in major scale and are part of the Cantiñas family.

In addition to finding elements of the Spanish Jotas in the Alegrías, we also find other elements that come from styles such as Coplas Romanceadas, Panaderos, lower-Andalusian Pregones, Seguidillas, ancient Fandangos from Cádiz and, above all, Jaleos sung in a major key.

They are lively, upbeat, fast-paced and as their name suggests, full of joy.

THANK YOU ❤️

May 11th marks the end of the Flamenco School Year at Mayo Street Arts.

Our Last Class will be held on Wednesday May 11th from 6-8 pm at Mayo Street Arts. This 2-hour class will be a Sevillanas Workshop & Celebration in one. All are welcome to join, no experience needed. We will explore the style of Sevillanas together, co-taught by flamenca extraordinaire Maria Mazorra, while enjoying some refreshments, potluck style!

Then… we will be taking a summer break to resume classes in the fall. It has been truly wonderful to reunite our community, to welcome many new members, and to DANCE IN PERSON!

Look out for pop-up workshops and performances this summer; fingers crossed!

My deepest gratitude to all for supporting, practicing, and loving flamenco as much as I do ❤️
